Music Blocks

Music Blocks is an innovative Sunny Hill Elementary after-school program that is provided to low-income students who participate in the Sunny Hill Boys and Girls Club. The program offers private and semi-private piano lessons with a mission to provide access to the building blocks of music literacy. It is a one-of-a-kind program that provides an opportunity for elementary school students to learn an important skill at no cost to them or their families.  Music Blocks is not just about learning to play a keyboard but about developing music literacy which leads to participation in other musical skills, promotes self-confidence and increases the drive for academic success.  The program relies totally on grants and charitable contributions and has more than doubled its enrollment since it began last year.  The Power of the Purse Grant would be used to fund associated instructor expenses and additional equipment and materials costs for the lessons.  All current 27 program recipients live within the BAUW service boundaries of School District 220.

WINGS Program, Inc.- Children & Family Service Program

The Children and Family Services Program addresses the challenges faced by youth who have experienced domestic violence or homelessness.  Participation in the program is strongly encouraged for underage residents of WINGS’ emergency and transitional housing.  Through the program, children are provided an avenue to express their feelings through counseling, art therapy classes, play groups, and social activities with other families.  A continued component of Children and Family Services includes ongoing educational support for children, with Children Advocates regularly consulting with school counselors and teachers, and Day Camp, offering children opportunities during summer and school holidays that are themed according to the calendar years.  The overarching goal of the program is to help clients become happy and well-adjusted despite their previous trauma.  The Power of the Purse Grant would be used to fund the activities provided through the Child and Family Services program.  Of the 451 children in this program, 4 are clients within the BAUW service boundaries of the School District 220.

Barrington Youth and Family Services – Cafecito: Grupo de Mujeres

The BYFS Cafecito program is an instructor-led discussion group offered to mothers of students at Sunny Hill Elementary.  The instructor, a bilingual licensed clinical therapist on staff at BYFS, directs a weekly free-of-charge group that gives mothers a community to discuss the challenges of living and integrating into another culture. Weekly topics include the importance of family, blending into a new culture while honoring the past, wellness, and activities that promote development, child socialization techniques, self-esteem, and intergenerational differences.  As an outgrowth of the program, BYFS is now providing clinical individual and/or family counseling services to members of the Cafecito program.  The Power of the Purse grant would be used for group supplies, group instructor costs, childcare expenses, and scholarships for client counseling sessions.   All 17 program recipients live within the BAUW service boundaries of the School District 220.
